Description
Abstract Fables is a tightly unified collection of poems, but the poems also break down into smaller coherent units. For example, "The Flower and the Leaf allegorically establishes the unfolding of the next four poems: in "Alexander's Feast," "The Twelfth Book of Ovid His Metamorphoses," and "The Speeches of Ajax and Ulysses" we see a world of the superficial values of the "Flower," identified with William's militaristic Court and those poets who sing its praise, run amuck; then, the whole section is resolved in "The Wife of Bath Her Tale," in which the eternal values of the "Leaf," a thinly veiled symbol for Dryden and Catholicism, prevail.
